Remember, we all stumble, every one of us.
That’s why it’s a comfort to go hand in hand.

The Steps We Take
His Faith Overcame His Pride ~ Guideposts
I’d spent over a decade building this log home in rural Maine. You bet I wanted to see everything he was doing, to see if his expression was as grave as his voice. To see if this dream had gone horribly wrong.
“Is it bad?” my wife, Debra, asked. For months she’d been telling me the wood was rotten. But I’d stubbornly refused to believe her. We’d suffered so many setbacks already. I couldn’t accept that God would have this in our plans too. No way. But finally I’d agreed to call this inspector.

As always, inspirational writing – something we expect from Guideposts. The difference here is that Bill Irwin is a Hero among long-distance hikers. This is the short-story version of why we feel that way.
The Role of Humility in Devotion
Taking responsibility for my part of the problem makes a difference. Humility signals that I’m asking God to work with me instead of expecting Him to solve my problems for me. Which means we have a relationship. And that’s good.

Ask Doctor K
DEAR DOCTOR K: I was recently diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Then, shortly afterward, I was diagnosed with sleep apnea. Could the two be related?
DEAR READER: One way they could be related is if you are overweight. The heavier you are, the greater your risk of both conditions.

Best. Vacation. Ever.
After this vacation, I think I can say in all honesty that I’ve never had a vacation before! Hiking the Foothills Trail was the high point, of course, but the whole thing was almost that good! Hiking – especially with hammocks as our sleeping accomodations – does not lend itself to marital intimacy, but the level of personal intimacy and honesty and love was something I don’t think I’ve experienced in all the years I’ve been sober. Got a brand new marriage, after nearly 30 years!
The ol man just left for work. I have to go shop for a birthday gift for a wonderful Friend…but I’m not exactly feeling the mood…
We’re slowly but surely adding entries to the Trail Journal…and I’m learning to add pictures to the gallery and to each entry. Duffy’s the BEST writer, so check it out if you get a few minutes. In case you didn’t know, the camera batteries died the first morning we were out…and I didn’t want to waste the battery power IF I could get my phone camera to work…so there are very few pictures for you to see. The pictures in my mind and the good feeling in my heart are enough, though.
Happy Wanderer
This is the song I hummed in my head, to pace my breathing while we were hiking last week.
I wish I knew why I do some of the things I do…
Anyone who reads this blog knows I write…not well, not inspirationally, not even funny most of the time. I write blather about my day, my life, my family…not exactly exciting. Why do I do it? Because I like to. If I had more time, I’d do it more. I’d be better organized, I’d look up the words I think I need to use so I didn’t sound so much like a cracker…but there ya go – this is what I do.
As you may or may not know, Duffy and I are leaving later this week to attempt to hike 48.8 miles of the Foothills Trail in North Carolina. We’re only committed to the first 30 miles or so, the rest depends on…well, a lot of things we can’t predict right now. We plan to keep a journal – in writing – as we go. And I got the idea from My Favorite Cousin, whom I love dearly, to sign up at TrailJournals.com and keep an online journal, too. IF you are interested in more of my blather, the link is http://www.trailjournals.com/MightyMouse. Comments there are as welcome as they are here! I don’t even know if I can update from my phone yet, but we’ll see, won’t we. If not, I’ll transcribe everything when we get back.
Now, aren’t YOU excited, too? Sure you are.
Fever broke
I was in a fog most of Thursday & Friday. Woke up yesterday knowing I had to make some things happen, but couldn’t find my change purse ANYwhere…so finally dug out my spare ID & went to get that little thing done…no, I’m not going into it, it’s just stuff. Anyway, I began to try to figure out where my little purse might be. It’s pink, about 3×4, just big enough for my ID, driver’s license, check cards, & library card & some cash, if I ever have any. After checking places I was sure it wasn’t, it came to my mind that the last time I’d seen it was the parking lot at Firehouse Subs. On Thursday. Called there. No luck. Checked a hundred more places. Nope. Kaylee’s mama came and picked her up around 5:30 and I tried to eat. Or something. Not sure, exactly. I think I remember cheese and crackers. Felt just horrid, snotty nose, headache, stuffy sinuses, fever…
I went to bed while it was storming. I’d been thinking of taking some Tylenol Nighttime Cold medicine, but was afraid how it would react with the regular bedtime meds I take – they already make me drowsy & then give the ability to sleep through EVERYTHING a storm can throw at me…so I didn’t take the Tylenol. I suppose I went to sleep with the light & tv on in the bedroom…but I really don’t know. I woke up around 4am, Duffy was in bed next to me, the light was off and so was the tv. The fever had broken, and I didn’t feel like death warmed over anymore. I went to the bathroom, then crawled under the sheet with the ol man. Woke up for good around 8am.
The cats were not amused.
I fed them anyway.
Duffy got up shortly after I did, we had coffee & I fixed him breakfast – he had to work at 1. Then I showered, while he looked a few places I’d already looked for my purse. Nope. I went down to the credit union, which is in the same strip mall (they don’t call them that anymore, do they?) as Firehouse Subs and Target. Cancelled the cards, ordered checks, then went to see if MAYBE my purse was at Firehouse.
Praise be to the Most High God – a man had turned it in shortly after I dropped it in the parking lot on Thursday!!! Everything was there and intact, even the $4.20 in cash!
So, I went back to the credit union to cancel the cancellation of my check cards! Life Is Good!
When I got home, I fixed Duffy a sandwich for lunch, then made us a reservation at a motel for the night before we begin our hike. I don’t know who named it, but I like it…behold, A Nice Little Motel…

…in Pickens, South Carolina. The picture is Room W, which will be ours for one night. There are only 4 rooms. I’m looking forward to the whole trip, but who can argue with a place like that for the start!
Now I’ve got to get the dishes done…and I’m hungry again. AND we may get more rain! Have a wonderful evening, and thanks for stopping by!
Busy weekend!
My Pixie stayed the night here Thursday, so I didn’t get to the meeting I usually attend. We had such a nice time, it is a joy to be around her. The last time she spent the night, I read her a story at bedtime, then came in here and got online to order one of her mama’s favorite bedtime stories when SHE was a little one, Loveable, Furry Old Grover’s Resting Places. It was one of my favorites to read, too, because I can do a pretty fair bad imitation of Grover!
Kaylee stayed Friday till after 3, so I didn’t get much done that day. Then I did our grocery shopping. Yay. Prices are playin’ hell with my budget…
Duffy was on call for the weekend, so didn’t go anywhere or do much. Worked in the yard, got the shutters up, and he built Kaylee a new swing. She came over yesterday, I think she likes it.
On Saturday, I also made a killer corned beef and cabbage to celebrate my husband’s Irish heritage. I didn’t make a boiled dinner, though, I baked the corned beef and sauteed some of our home-grown cabbage. Added a couple kohlrabi to that. Then simmered the red potatoes and carrots in the juice from the corned beef package. Hubby says it was the best he’s ever had. And that’s sayin’ something! Of course, I fixed it the same way last year, he just wasn’t here to eat it – Lovely Daughter got it then. This year, I’m feasting on leftovers!
We did a short training hike at Tillie Fowler Regional Park again. Getting CLOSE now!
I seem to be having either a nasty allergy attack, or I’ve got an ‘upper respiratory infection.’ Either way, I better be better by this time next week! Busy day ahead, better get started – y’all have a great day, and thanks for stopping by!
